Maru Becomes the Champion of WESG 2017 StarCraft 2 Finals

Cho "Maru" Seong Ju, a 20-years-old Terran player from South Korea, defeated Park "Dark" Ryung Woo in the grand finals of WESG 2017 StarCraft II competition, getting $200,000 in prize money.

The $400,000 event was held on March 13-18 at in Haikou, China. First, 30 participating players were seeded into eight groups with best-of-three series, best two players from each group advanced further. Then, these players were put into four groups with best-of-five series, again two best players from each group made it to the next stage. Finally, in the playoffs eight best players competed in a single-elimination bracket with all matches being best-of-five except for the grand finals which were best-of-seven.

Both Maru and Dark finished their group stages without a single lost match. In the playoffs Maru defeated 3-0 both Reynor and Serral, while Dark managed to overcome Scarlett (3-0) and Classic (3-1). The grand finals concluded with a 4-3 score in favour of the Terran player Maru, he took home the lion share of the $400,000 prize pool – $200,000.
